North Carolina – An American Portrait

The heartbeat of North Carolina lies in its rich past and vibrant present. The historic seaports and coastal plains, the red-clay rich Piedmont, the peaceful towns and bustling cities, the rugged beauty of the Smoky Mountains are all meaningfully captured in this exquisite, memorable half hour. “North Carolina – An American Portrait” is an impressionistic, provocative, and artful depiction of one of the oldest and most diverse states in America. The spirit of its people resonates throughout the program, and across generations, allowing viewers to feel what it really means to be a North Carolinian.

Narrated by renowned North Carolina author, Bland Simpson, the program is a blend of breathtaking cinematography, archival imagery, and poignant dramatic readings from old diaries, letters and literature. The music includes selections from Doc Watson, Shirley Caesar and The Mount Calvary Word of Faith Choir, and Ryan Adams. Many of the haunting, beautiful black and white images in the show are those of famed North Carolina photographer Bayard Wootten.
